Discontinued — Pro Tools FREE for Mac OS 9 and Windows 98/Me are no longer available for download or on CD.

There are no current plans for a standalone version or a free version of Pro Tools for either Mac OS X, Windows XP, or Windows Vista.

When Pro Tools FREE for Mac OS9 and Windows 98/Me was released years ago, it was originally meant to be a temporary demonstration tool for Pro Tools. At that time, there were no portable (USB or FireWire) Digidesign interfaces, only Pro Tools systems that used PCI hardware. Since that time, Digidesign has introduced the Mbox, Mbox 2 Family, Digi 002 Family, and 003 Family interfaces, as well as Pro Tools M-Powered software, which supports many M-Audio portable interfaces.

All Pro Tools software for Mac OS X and Windows XP-Vista requires a supported audio interface, either Digidesign hardware (with Pro Tools LE or Pro Tools HD software); or M-Audio hardware (Pro Tools M-Powered software).
  • Pro Tools HD software for Mac OS X and Windows XP is included with all Pro Tools|HD hardware systems.
  • Pro Tools LE software for Mac OS X and Windows XP - Vista is included with all Pro Tools LE hardware systems (003 Family, Mbox 2 Family, Digi 002 Family)
  • Pro Tools M-Powered software for Mac OS X and Windows XP - Vista can be purchased and used with any supported M-Audio audio interface.

Pro Tools M-Powered Demo
The only demo version of Pro Tools is the Pro Tools M-Powered demo version available for Mac and Windows. A compatible M-Audio interface is required to use the demo version, available for download from the M-Audio website:

Pro Tools FREE Archived Compatibility Information
There was no Pro Tools FREE version for Windows XP or Mac OS X, and the above applications will not work on either operating system, or in Classic when booted in Mac OS X.
