HP xw8600 Workstation


Requirements with Pro Tools HD 7.4/8.0 for Windows XP & Pro Tools HD 8.0 on Windows Vista (32-bit)

The HP xw8600 Workstation is officially qualified with Pro Tools HD 7.4 & 8.0 software and the following Pro Tools|HD systems:
  • Pro Tools|HD Accel PCIe (PCI Express) Systems:
    • HD1, HD2, HD3, and HD4 Accel PCIe systems supported, all cards installed internally on the xw8600
    • HD Accel Core and up to 6 Accel PCIe cards, all cards installed in the Digidesign EB7 PCIe-to-PCIe Expansion Chassis (HD 8.0 and higher only)

  • Pro Tools|HD PCI Systems:
    • Pro Tools|HD and Pro Tools|HD Accel PCI systems are not supported for internal installation on the xw8600
    • HD Core and up to 5 HD PCI cards, all cards installed in the Magma PE6R4 or Digidesign Expansion|HD 6 Slot Expansion Chassis

  • Pro Tools|HD PCI and Pro Tools|HD PCIe cards cannot be combined in any system
  • Pro Tools|HD cards cannot be installed in both the host computer and an expansion chassis. All HD cards must be in only one hardware host system or the other.

  • Please Note: The HP xw8600 has not been tested with Pro Tools HD 7.3.1 or earlier

When configuring a system, please be aware of all of the additional system requirements and supported configurations for Pro Tools|HD, Avid video peripherals, and Avid workgroups as listed on these Digidesign Compatibility Documents.

Supported Processors
Single processor configurations not supported. 2 matched processors of the following available processors are required for compatibility:
  • Dual-Core Intel® Xeon® processor 5200 seies
  • Quad-Core Intel® Xeon® processor 5400 series
    • Optional 1050W power supply recommended for systems with 5460 processors

HP xw8600 Configuration Requirements



The following items are required for proper compatibility and operation of the HP xw8600 and Pro Tools HD systems.

BIOS Version
  • Pro Tools HD 8.0: HP xw8600 Workstation System BIOS Version 01.32 and System BIOS Version 01.07
  • Pro Tools HD 7.4: HP xw8600 Workstation System BIOS Version 01.07
    • Although there are currently no known issues with later BIOS versions, the xw8600 was tested and qualified by Digidesign with Pro Tools HD 7.4 with version 01.07 only.

BIOS Settings
The PCIe lane distribution must be set correctly to ensure HD compatibility and performance:
1. Press F10 at boot time to enter Setup
2. Under the Advanced menu, select Chipset/Memory
3. Set PCIe Lane Allocation (SLOT4:SLOT5) to "x8:x8" — (Do not set to "Auto" or "x16:x1")
4. Press F10
5. Select Save Changes and Exit
6. Press Enter
7. Press F10

Supported Graphics Cards
The graphics cards tested with the xw8600 are:
  • nVidia Quadro 290
  • nVidia Quadro 370
Both are single-slot PCIe graphics cards.

Supported Boot Drive Configuration
The supported boot drive configuration for the xw8600 is:
  • SATA

No Internal Floppy Option
The xw8600 should be ordered without an internal floppy drive. The floppy drive cable connector attaches to the motherboard at a location that prevents Pro Tools HD cards from properly seating.

    • Windows XP Professional x64 Edition (64-bit)
    • Windows XP Home Edition
    • Windows XP Media Center Edition
    • Windows 98, Me, 2000, NT, 95, 3.1, DOS

System RAM Requirements
  • 1GB RAM minimum required (2GB or more highly recommended)
    • 2.5GB required for maximum track count
More RAM increases overall system and Pro Tools performance, and is especially recommended for working with:
  • Large amounts of audio
  • Large DSP engines
  • High edit density
  • Large DigiBase databases
  • A large number of installed plug-ins
  • Options like MachineControl and DigiTranslator
  • Elastic Time enabled on multiple tracks (Pro Tools 7.4 and higher only)
  • Simultaneous use with other applications
2GB (2048 MB) minimum required with the following options:
  • D-Control
  • Avid video peripherals
  • Avid interchange

    • Dual-channel Ultra320 PCI-X SCSI Host Adapter
    • The Default Settings in the ATTO Configuration Tool should be used
Please Note: If using 4 Pro Tools|HD Accel PCIe cards, no PCIe slot is available for the ATTO UL5D. For 4 HD card systems, the ATTO UL4D PCI-X card is the only SCSI HBA that can be used.

Optional FireWire/1394 Controller PCI Card
FireWire storage must be connected to a PCI FireWire card when used with Avid video peripherals.

Avid video peripherals (Avid Mojo, Avid Mojo SDI or AVoption|V10) will not function if any other device is connected to the same FireWire bus (FireWire video cameras may connect directly to an Avid video peripheral).

However, if you wish to have other FireWire devices connected to your system, you must install a PCI FireWire card to create an additional FireWire bus. The ADS PYRO 64R2 and PYro 64 have been qualified with the xw8600 with and without Avid video peripherals:
