Pro Tools Academic Hardware/Software Requirements |
Pro Tools Academic Product Information
Concurrent with the release of Pro Tools 7.4 software, the Pro Tools Academic line of products is being discontinued and replaced by a combination of Pro Tools M-Powered Educational products and Pro Tools LE Educational bundles from Digidesign’s Mbox 2 product line. The Pro Tools Academic products being discontinued are Pro Tools M-Powered Academic software, the Pro Tools MobilePre USB Academic Kit, and the Pro Tools Ozone Academic Kit.
These discontinued Pro Tools MobilePre USB Academic Kit and the Pro Tools Ozone Academic Kit included the following:
- M-Audio Pro Tools Academic hardware audio interface (M-Audio MobilePre Academic or M-Audio Ozone Academic)
Please Note: These Pro Tools Academic M-Audio hardware interfaces differ from the non-Academic versions of the M-Audio MobilePre and M-Audio Ozone hardware interfaces. The Pro Tools Academic hardware has been designed specifically to work with Pro Tools Academic software.
- Pro Tools Academic Installer disc, which contains Pro Tools Academic software, updated M-Audio drivers, DigiRack RTAS (Real-Time AudioSuite) and AudioSuite plug-ins, and electronic PDF guides
System Requirements
Pro Tools Academic 7.1.1 Software
- The M-Audio MobilePre Academic or M-Audio Ozone Academic hardware device must be connected to your computer to run Pro Tools Academic software
- Pro Tools Academic supports the use of a single M-Audio peripheral. Simultaneous use of multiple M-Audio peripherals is not supported.
- Other audio interfaces from M-Audio will not work with Pro Tools Academic software
- Audio interfaces by Digidesign or any manufacturer other than M-Audio will not work with Pro Tools Academic software
Authorization
- Pro Tools Academic software is included with and automatically authorized for use with the M-Audio MobilePre Academic or M-Audio Ozone Academic.
- An iLok USB hardware key is NOT required or included with M-Audio MobilePre Academic or M-Audio Ozone Academic purchases. An iLok is only needed for optional plug-ins that may be purchased that require an iLok for authorization.
System Software — Mac OS X
- Pro Tools Academic 7.1.1 is officially supported on Mac OS X 10.4.6, 10.4.7, and 10.4.8 (Tiger) for PowerPC-based Macs
- Pro Tools Academic 7.1.1 will NOT work on Intel-based Macs
- Intel-based Macs require Pro Tools Academic 7.3.x software or Pro Tools M-Powered 7.4 software (or higher M-Powered version)
- All versions of Pro Tools 7 are incompatible with Mac OS X 10.3.9 (Panther) and earlier
System Software — Windows XP
- Windows XP Professional or Home Edition
- Not Supported:
- Windows XP Professional x64 Edition
- Windows XP Media Center Edition
- Pro Tools Academic 7.1.1 is qualified with Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP1 not tested)
- Pro Tools Academic 7.1.1 software can't be installed or used on systems running Windows 98, Me, 2000, NT, 95, or 3.1
Total System RAM
- 512MB minimum required for Pro Tools Academic, more recommended
- More RAM increases overall system and Pro Tools performance
- More RAM suggested for sessions with high edit density, extensive use of plug-ins, or simultaneous use with MIDI sequencers
- Refer to motherboard manufacturer for supported RAM version

Pro Tools Academic Capabilities
Pro Tools Academic software provides the following capabilities:
- Playback of up to 32 mono (or 16 stereo) digital audio tracks, or a combination of playing back and recording up to 32 mono (or 16 stereo) digital audio tracks, depending on your M-Audio interface and computer’s
capabilities
- Up to 128 audio tracks (with 32 voiceable tracks maximum), 128 Auxiliary Input tracks, 64 Master Fader tracks, 256 MIDI tracks, and 32 instrument tracks per session
- M-Audio MobilePre Academic supports 16-bit audio resolution at sample rates up to 48kHz
- M-Audio Ozone Academic supports 16-bit or 24-bit audio resolution at sample rates up to 96kHz
- 96kHz recording or playback requires disabling either input or output within the Pro Tools Academic software to achieve one-way stream at 96kHz
- Non-destructive, random-access editing and mix automation
- Audio processing with up to 5 RTAS plugins per track, depending on your computer’s capabilities
- Up to 5 hardware inserts per track
- Up to 10 sends per track
- Up to 32 internal mix busses
How Pro Tools Academic Differs from Pro Tools LE or M-Powered
Time Code and Synchronization Features
Pro Tools Academic includes the following additional features, which are not included with standard Pro Tools LE or M-Powered:
- Time Code Timebase ruler
- Feet+Frame Timebase ruler
- Time Code Rate Selector
- Feet+Frame Rate Selector
- Redefine Time Code Position
- Redefine Current Feet+Frames Position
- Use Subframes option
- Audio and Video Pull Up and Pull Down commands
- Time Code Mapping options
DigiTranslator Software Option
Pro Tools Academic automatically installs DigiTranslator software. DigiTranslator lets Pro Tools exchange audio and video files, and sequences with other AAF and OMFI-compatible applications.
Configuration Dialogs and Procedures
Some Pro Tools Academic configuration dialogs (such as Hardware Setup) and configuration procedures differ from the Pro Tools LE dialogs and procedures presented in the Pro Tools Reference Guide.
