(June 12, 2006) — Audio Research Labs is shipping its ARL Sound Stage™ suite of plug-ins for Pro Tools|HD platforms. The suite consists of the ARL Pan and ARL X-Over plug-ins, and run on Pro Tools HD 6.7 and 7.x software releases, with either HD Core or HD Accel hardware for the Mac OS.

“ARL Sound Stage offers a new way to mix for multi-channel sound,” says Dr. Schuyler Quackenbush, President of Audio Research Labs. “It gives the user an exciting, easy-to-use graphical interface with enough control to either mix in a way that approximates a true sound field, or in the classic gain-panning mode.”

“We are excited to be a part of the Digidesign Pro Tools plug-in community,” says Paul Geluso, Senior Sound Engineer at Audio Research Labs. “There is a significant need for tools for mixing multi-channel sound, so we hope these plug-ins will be in the tool bag of everyone working in multi-channel.”

The ARL Pan plug-in is designed to enhance imaging for surround mixing environments. In order to get a realistic stereo or surround image, some correlated and de-correlated information must exist in all channels. A conventional panning system simply provides level differences to each channel. This might be effective for stereo, where if provides hard left, hard right and phantom imaging in-between left and right. However, for surround mixing, a more complex processing method is needed for total emersion into a 360 degree sound field. The ARL Pan module adds dynamic processing including phase and equalization to deliver an enhanced and more realistic image.

The ARL X-Over is a high-fidelity, extremely stable cross-over filter that can be used either to prepare mixes for systems with a subwoofer or to simulate how a mix would sound on a system with a given subwoofer crossover frequency. It offers user-selectable filter orders, from 6 to 48 dB/octave, and uses Butterworth filters for even orders and Linkwitz-Riley filters for odd orders. Filters are factored into second-order Modified Chamberlin sections for maximum numerical stability, and the low-pass and the high-pass signal components are derived from a single filter structure, insuring accurate crossover alignment.

A free, 14-day demo of the ARL Sound Stage plug-ins is available at soundstage.audioresearchlabs.com. An iLok Smart Key is required to use the demo.
