Creating, recording and mixing tracks quicker than ever in a complete Pro Tools environment

Pinewood Studios (September 21st, 2007) – Music Producer Andy Gray has chosen a Digidesign® ICON D-Control™ worksurface for his studio, Real Noize, on the Isle of Wight. With the purchase of a 32-fader ICON D-Control surface to add to his Pro Tools|HD® Accel system, Gray is now completing all of his mixing and writing ‘in-the-box’. As a Writer/Producer and Re-mixer, Gray has worked with artists including Tori Amos, Gary Numan and U2, but is probably best known for co-writing the BigBrother Theme for TV Company Endemol.

As an early adopter of an integrated Pro Tools workflow, Andy comments on the advanced automation features available with ICON over other consoles; “With D-Control, I don’t use the mouse at all, everything is led from pots and faders and I find it really easy to automate from the surface - I’m not nervous going into automation mode, everything is touch sensitive. The way I’m work I’m constantly mixing, virtually from the first thing I write I automate everything as I’m going along. When you are working with a mouse you can’t see what’s happening very easily.”

Combining the added functionality of a digital console with the features expected of an analogue console, Andy can take advantage of the flexibility of accessing any of his plug-ins from the control surface, while still mixing as he would on an in-line console. “A major benefit for me is the overall dynamics button, giving you the ability to see the gain reduction right across the meter bridge. That, single handedly, is a massive leap forward. And similarly for the overall EQ button, you can grab the overall top end of the mix and effect the whole sound really quickly.”

In combination with the ICON control surface, Gray is keen user of the AIR Virtual Instruments and is currently writing and remixing tracks completely within the Pro Tools environment for Kerrang Award Winners, Enter Shikari.
