Creating Warp Markers for Elastic Time in Pro Tools 7.4

DigiNews Tips & Tricks: December 2007

New in Pro Tools® 7.4 software, there are two additional view options for audio tracks in the Edit Window: Warp and Analysis views. These views are available when Elastic Time is enabled on an audio track.

Enabling Elastic Time on an audio track
  1. On all audio tracks, there is a new Elastic Time drop down menu.
(1- Elastic Time drop down menu,
    2- Elastic Time-enabled audio track)
  2. From there you have five algorithms to choose from:
Polyphonic, Rhythmic, Monophonic, Varispeed, and X-Form (rendered only).
  3. Choosing any of these algorithms will enable Elastic Time features for the audio track.

When either the Warp or Analysis view option is chosen, markers are automatically created at the transients in the audio track in a manner similar to Beat Detective™.

But what about creating new markers?

Of course, Pro Tools 7.4 software allows you to create your own custom markers anywhere you like for total control. Here's how:
  1. On an audio track, choose Analysis view
  2. Select the Grabber tool
(Click on the Grabber tool icon in the top of the Edit Window or press F8 on your keyboard)
  3. With your mouse, double click between two markers
(Double click the marker to delete it)
  4. Analysis view allows you to reposition the markers, while Warp view allows you to stretch the audio using the markers
Endless Possibilities

By creating your own markers, you can get very creative! Try putting stutter edits on vocals or stretching guitars to make custom rhythmic drones. For more on Pro Tools 7.4 software's Elastic Time, including video demonstrations, visit the Pro Tools 7.4 software section.
