| How do I clean the D-Show or D-Control built-in Trackball? |
Remove the Trackball PCB from the bottom of the Trackball plate and use a diluted citrus-based cleanser (Citra-Solv) to break down any dirt & grime on the buttons.
Open up the trackball case from underneath (there are 4 screws securing the panel underneath the trackball) and wipe off any dirt/dust/hair that has gathered on the rollers. Also clean the trackball itself with citrus cleanser.

|
| After powering on a D-Control, an error message is displayed on the Surround Panner LCD. |
This is a known issue in Pro Tools HD 7.2 & 7.4.
Error message: Panner Internal Error: Error in file HWScan.ccp in function RotaryUpdate at line 493. Failed condition: in PipeCount<(ROTARY_IN_PIPE_BYTE_COUNT-10).
The workaround is to dismiss the dialog (press “Continue” on the touchscreen). However, if the problem is chronic, the hardware will have to be fixed.
This error dialog, seen on the Mayo screen, indicates that there is a hardware failure in the Rotary Encoder subsystem. It may be temporary, e.g. caused by some transient electrical noise, or it may be chronic, e.g. due to a failed Encoder board or the encoder itself, or a related cable, connection or component.
Some possible “quick fixes” to the hardware: clean the contacts on the Encoder board connectors, swap the left and right encoder boards, or replace the cables to the encoder boards.

|
| Touch command is lost and fader pushes back on both D-Control and D-Command. |
This is a known issue in Pro Tools HD 7.3 (Mac OS X and Windows XP). This issue does not exist in Pro Tools HD 7.4.
Sometimes when quickly grabbing and moving a fader, the touch command is lost and the fader pushes back. Pro Tools does not record the automation data.
To minimize this occurance, always make solid contact with the top of the fader with the skin of your finger (not the nail).
This issue has been fixed in Pro Tools HD 7.3.1cs6 (for Mac OS X and Windows XP)

Troubleshooting Motorized Faders.
|
| Troubleshooting Motorized Faders. |
Below is a compilation of general information and troubleshooting for Digidesign's control surfaces with moving faders. Specifics regarding particular control surfaces (such as D-Control or 003) have been included after the generalized troubleshooting section with links to each console's Product Information page.
General Troubleshooting and Information
If you are experiencing sticky or fighting faders that don't react correctly to your touch (but respond to automation within Pro Tools), read the information below for valuable troubleshooting:
- Touch-sensitive faders rely on the capacitance of the human body relative to ground. Human capacitance is different between individuals, and can be changed by our immediate environment. For example, a touch sensitive fader may react differently to one person with dry hands than one with moist hands, since the moisture will conduct better during the process of attaching you (“the capacitor”) to the circuit.
- Heavy carpets, socks, and soft-soled shoes can further isolate the operator from ground, affecting the ability of the circuit to effectively sense your capacitance to ground. Ground bracelets, grounding floor mats, and hard-soled shoes can help. Try both standing and sitting, as a comfortable chair may also be isolating you from ground.
- Check the ground of the room the unit is installed in and make sure that a true earth-ground is present. Try different outlets or locations (NOTE: there is enough voltage from your wall outlet to be quite deadly - as with all electrical troubleshooting, EXCERCISE EXTREME CAUTION. If you are unfamiliar with electricity and related safety precautions, we highly recommend you call a certified electrician).
- Sometimes, the metal paint coating under the fader cap which makes contact with the glide on the fader can peel, causing intermittent contact. Inspect the underside of the fader cap for missing paint and contact Digidesign for a replacement, if necessary. Fader replacements are also available for purchase directly from the Webstore, under Services > Spares.
- Dust can limit the responsiveness of the faders. Try blowing out the fader track with compressed air.
- It is possible for another device in the room to cause touch problems on a unit that had been working fine previously. Be sure to test your control surface in a minimal environment before connecting other gear.
Testing Faders
For each console, there are multiple fader tests. These tests may include: Triangle, Sine, Step, Cycle, Group, Recal, and Touch. Read below for information on how to run and interpret these tests (note that some tests vary between products):
Triangle, Sine, Step, and Cycle tests will move the faders in the selected pattern up and down the fader throw. Group test allows you to move all faders together by only touching one. In these tests, the display will report which step-bit the fader is currently on. There are a total of 1024 steps (0-1023) for a 10-bit resolution throw.
Recal will reset the throw of all faders. If you have faders that don't seem to travel the entire throw, or seem like their range is limited, you should recalibrate the faders by running this test. Control surfaces that do not have this option automatically calibrate themselves when powered on; if you experience similar problems on these consoles, simply power-cycle the unit.

D-Control transport section and keyboard appears inoperable when Transport ...
|
| D-Control transport section and keyboard appears inoperable when Transport = Machine with some devices. |
Seen in Pro Tools HD 7.2, 7.3.1cs3 and 7.4.2cs2.
Engaged and shuttling some devices (in this case a projector), where Transport = Machine, it is sometimes not possible to initiate playback or shuttle the device from the D-Control transport section or keyboard (or any other USB attached keyboard). Only the trackball or a mouse will work.
Workaround:
There is a preference in 7.2, 7.3 and 7.4 that needs to be enabled in order for the D-Control transport and keyboard to control the device correctly when Transport = Machine.
Here's how: Setup > Preferences > Synchronization > Enable 'Stop at Shuttle Speed Zero'.
Note: This preference appears to be enabled by default in earlier versions of Pro Tools (we tested 7.1cs10).
This preference must be enabled to control the Kinoton FP30 E/Q projector.
