Why does my Pro Tools LE session clip when I open it on TDM hardware?

Why does my Pro Tools LE session clip when I open it on TDM hardware?
Pro Tools LE uses the power of your CPU's processor to perform mixing and processing. A side benefit of this technology is its ability to use 32-bit floating point math to scale the level of signals to avoid clipping (which translates to great headroom). Signals in Pro Tools LE can indeed clip, but signal management can be easier... you mostly have to watch output levels for mixed signal busses and bring them down so that they don't clip.

Pro Tools TDM systems use HW DSP acceleration that utilize 24-bit fixed point math. (Comparing 24-bit fixed point and 32-bit floating point audio systems is a bit like comparing PowerPC and Intel Pentium processors... properly implemented and designed, you can get a great result out of either one... but comparing the techniques used directly can be difficult!) TDM systems provide 48 bits of precision at the mix bus, which allows a very large degree of headroom as well. However, Plug-In processing in the TDM world is restricted to a 24-bit data path, so as with most any signal processing in the audio world, some attention to level setting is necessary to avoid clipping.

For example , if you introduce a signal into a DigiRack EQ that is close to "full code" (the hottest digital level before clipping) and you add a large boost on an EQ, you will likely clip the EQ Plug-In. Just as with any rack mounted device, etc., you can avoid this simply by using the input attenuator control provided. The EQ Plug-In for Pro Tools LE behaves the same way, but because all of the processing is occurring in the host computer, the levels can be scaled for you to avoid most clipping without adjustment (other than mix outputs which require it).

Note: Some Plug-Ins use a technique called "double precision arithmetic" to provide 48 bit precision when processing, which results in increased headroom. This is great, but keep in mind that these Plug-In do require roughly twice as much DSP power to do their work.

Because of these differences, if you plan on exchanging sessions between Pro Tools LE and TDM systems, it can be prudent to attenuate the input level of a Plug-In like DigiRack EQ if you have applied a large amount of boost to a predominant frequency (like a big booming kick drum). This will avoid the possibility of clipping in the TDM version of the Plug-In, and you'll still get to take advantage of a "24-bit clean signal" when levels are set correctly.

My D-Verb plug-in is not functioning properly after installing Pro Tools LE 5.1 Mac. D-Verb asks for a key disk authorization, and I only have a serial number. Do I need a key disk?
WARNING: FREE D-Verb does not work with Pro Tools FREE.

Installing Pro Tools LE 5.1 or the D-Verb Plug-In Demo over previous installs of Pro Tools LE will remove your FREE D-Verb Plug-In. To keep your FREE D-Verb Plug-in from being overwritten by the Pro Tools LE 5.1 and D-Verb Demo Installers, remove both the D-Verb and D-Verb AS Plug-Ins from your Plug-Ins folder.Place the plug-ins in a temporary location other than the Pro Tools Plug-Ins folder and outside of your System Folder, such as on your Desktop. The Plug-Ins folder is located in the following directory:System Folder:DAE Folder:Plug-Ins

After removing the D-Verb & D-Verb AS Plug-Ins from the Plug-Ins folder, run the Pro Tools 5.1 LE Installer. Once the Pro Tools 5.1 installation is complete, both the D-Verb and D-Verb AS Plug-Ins can be returned to the Plug-Ins folder. An updated FREE D-Verb Installer for Pro Tools LE users is posted on the Digidesign website in Support/Downloads at http://www.digidesign.com/download

Note: If you have already run either the Pro Tools LE 5.1 or D-Verb Demo Installer and fear you have overwritten your FREE D-Verb Plug-Ins,you can still reinstall the FREE D-Verb Plug-In Promotion from the Pro Tools LE 5.0.1 Software CD.

If you continue to have problems with your D-Verb authorization, download D-Verb v1.8.1 from http://www.digidesign.com/download/dverb. This version of D-Verb (v1.8.1) does not require authorization. [Page View]

How do I get the WaveDriver to install If I installed it with the add ...

How do I get the WaveDriver to install If I installed it with the add new hardware control panel.
There are two ways:
1) Remove your Digi 001 or Audiomedia III from the Device Manager, and then delete the digidesigndalwdm.inf file in directory path of C:\Windows\inf\other\digidesigndalwdm.inf
Then restart the computer. After the computer restarts, windows will detect the Digi hardware again. After Windows detects the hardware, choose specify location and browse to the folder where the WaveDriver is on the Pro Tools disc.

2) You can also use the update driver option under the driver tab for the Digi 001\Audiomedia III in Device Manager. (This will only work if the user had installed using the add new hardware control panel to install the driver).

How do I record a MIDI track as an audio track in Pro Tools?

How do I record a MIDI track as an audio track in Pro Tools?
1) Create an audio track(s). If a stereo recording is desired, create a stereo track or make two audio channels and pan each hard (100) left and right.

2) Connect the outputs of your MIDI device (keyboard, drum machine, etc.) into available inputs of your Digidesign Hardware.

3) Set the input of the audio track(s) to the Digidesign Hardware input(s) you have connected to the outputs of your MIDI device.

4) If you are not actually recording yet but want to monitor the signal through an audio track(s), make sure that Pro Tools LE is set to Input Monitor only under the Operations menu.

5) Record enable your audio channel(s) and hit play/record.

When I overdub audio with prerecorded MIDI the two are slightly out of sync in Pro Tools LE or TDM.
You need to set the Negative MIDI Playback Offset in the Preferences menu. Choose Setups>Preferences>MIDI. This capability is provided to compensate for the audio monitoring latency. If you are monitoring the output from your midi devices thru a mixer, there is no latencey. If however, you are monitoring the devices thru the Digi 001 the midi tracks will play slightly later that the audio tracks. The larger the setting for the Hardware Buffer size, the larger the latency.

By configuring a Midi offset, you can get your Midi tracks to play back slightly earlier by a specified number of samples, thereby compensating for the latency in monitoring qudio within Pro Tools LE.
