The 192 I/O audio interface has a connection design where all audio connections on the I/O cards are via DB25 connectors*. This is due to lack of real estate. There physically is not enough room on the back of the 192 I/O for its entire throughput capacity to be available on individual connectors.
Important: The 192 I/O audio interface has a connection design where all analog, AES/EBU and TDIF connections on the I/O cards are via standard DB25 connectors*. Because of this, it is important to realize that unless you will be using a custom wiring installation, EVERY 192 I/O sold, new or through an exchange, will need the purchase of one or more DigiSnakes or other standard DB25-based cables in order to use these I/O.
* ADAT I/O is via TOS-Link, and SPDIF Digital is via RCA

DB25-XLR M+F AES/EBU Snake
- DB25 to 4 XLR Male and 4 XLR Female.
- Below 192 KHz, AES/EBU carries 2 channels per line, so this snake transmits 8 out and 8 in via the 8 XLR connectors.
- At 192kHz sample rate, the 192 I/O is using dual wire transmission. This means the AES snake transmits 4 out and 4 in at 192 kHz. In this case, the connector labeled "output 1&2" is output 1, "output 3&4" is output 2, and so forth.
- The 4 XLRF wire jackets are yellow; the 4 XLRM jackets are black, all with appropriate labeling..
- Product MH080; Length: 12 feet.
DB25-XLRM Snake
- DB25 to 8 XLR Male; Output snake.
- Analog or digital.
- Red jackets on both ends with appropriate labeling.
- Product MH081; Length: 12 feet.
DB25-XLRF Snake
- DB25 to 8 XLR Female; Input snake.
- Analog or digital.
- Blue jackets on both ends with appropriate labeling.

DB25-TRS Snake

- Cannot be used for AES/EBU or TDIF digital dubbing. For TDIF dubbing, use the TDIF DigiSnake (below). For AES/EBU digital dubbing, use two AES/EBU DigiSnakes, connected end to end (XLR to XLR).

DB25-DB25R ProControl Snake
- DB25 to pin-reversed DB25.
- This DigiSnake was developed specifically to compensate for the reversed pin outs on the ProControl. Typically used to connect the 192 I/O output to the audio input of the ProControl.
- Purple jackets on both ends with appropriate labeling.
- Product MH086; Length: 25 feet.
DB25-TS +4 dBu/-10 dBV Padded DigiSnake
- Balanced +4 dBu DB25 to unbalanced -10 dBV TS snake.
- This snake contains the appropriate padding circuit to reduce the 192 I/O's +4 dBu output signal down to -10 dBV.
- For +4 dBu output only. Use any other input snake for return/input.
- Grey jackets on both ends with appropriate labeling.
- Product MH087; Length: 12 feet.
DB25-DB25 TDIF Only DigiSnake
- TDIF Digital (dubbing) cable. Designed for digital TDIF transfers only.
- Can only be used for TDIF to TDIF- i.e., Tascam MDM to 192 I/O TDIF connector.
- Cannot be used for AES/EBU digital dubbing. For AES/EBU digital dubbing, use two AES/EBU DigiSnakes, connected end to end (XLR to XLR).

DigiSnake Kits are multiple DigiSnakes that are custom labeled and designed specifically for Digidesign Control Surfaces, all in one box. These kits make for a quick and easy "all cables in one box" solution for ProControl or Control|24.
There are three DigiSnake Kits available.
ProControl DigiSnake Kit -- Product MC100-C
Includes the following three 8-channel snakes:
- DB25 to 8 XLR Female (2)
- DB25 to 8 XLR Male (1)
Control|24 XLR/TRS DigiSnake Kit -- Product MC124-C
Includes the following seven 8-channel snakes:

On Bit-3 chassis shipped in 1998, all three boards have a PCI Bridge Chip. These must be IBM bridge chips with the "82353" part number. IBM chips with the "82352" part number are not supported with MIX systems.

Every configuration will have a specific slot order. Your Pro Tools system should come with a booklet entitled, Pro Tools Expanded System Guide. In this document you will find the specific slot order for your system.
Slots in the computer: there is no general rule for the slot order of the host card in the computer (sometimes it goes in the lowest slot, sometimes in the middle, and sometimes at the highest numbered slot). Additionally, other cards may have to be installed in the computer, such as a supported SCSI card, or a video capture card.
Slots in the expansion chasis: for Digidesign cards in the expansion chassis, the general order to follow (from lowerst to highest slot number) is, Mix Core, Mix Farms, d24s, Mix I/Os, DSP Farm II’s*, DSP Farm I’s*, and Sample Cell II’s (TDM or non-TDM).
Here are a two examples, using common configurations: A Pro Tools Mix Plus system, with added Mix cards, DSP Farms and Sample Cell cards:

Both cards are functionally identical and perform exactly the same. The only difference is that some DSP Farm I’s may need an upgrade of one of the chips in order to work in newer computer models or expansion chassis. If you have a DSP Farm I and are unsure of whether you need the upgrade, consult the Digidesign Technical Support department.
