What QuickTime movie settings would put the least load on the CPU when imported into Pro Tools? Do the video compression settings, or any other settings, make any difference once the QuickTime movie is imported into Pro Tools?
- If you are playing back the movie in the Pro Tools and displaying the movie on your monitor, then the settings of your movie export in Final Cut Pro (FCP) are very important. You don't want to put too much stress on your CPU which is busy doing other things.

The best codecs to use would be Motion JPEG or Cinepak, at data rates as low as possible. Also, size as small as possible would be best, but of course you do need to be able to see the movie to work with it.

I would try M-JPEG at around 200mb/sec data rate and a size of 320 x 240 at 30 fps. All three factors will have an effect on quality and usability. If that doesn't work well, try lowering the data rate to see if you can get acceptable results. Also, I'm not sure what the output options of FCP are, so you may not have control over data rates in Motion JPEG export.

Stay away from Sorenson compression, as it requires a lot of computer resources to decode and is really designed for web data rates.

Best option would be to get a hardware transcoder that will do all the decoding work for you instead of the CPU, such as Mojo, Canopus or Igniter. This does all the decompression in hardware instead of using your computing resources so heavily, and then displays the picture on a TV monitor, saving space on your computer monitor.

After a reboot, launching Pro Tools LE v6.8.1 with Sonobox in OS 10.4.1, can sometimes take anywhere from 10 to 30 seconds for the Sonobox USB light to come on and for the device to be seen by the computer.
In some cases, a user may need to hot plug the device in order to successfully launch Pro Tools.

This is caused by a DHCP network preference created by Mac OS X that often takes a few moments to load before the Sonobox is able to bind to its own driver. To eliminate this preference, delete "preferences.plist" in Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration

Note: If a user resets their network info (or if they use DHCP to connect to the Internet which most DSL and cable modem users do) it is possible for this preference to be refreshed. [Page View]

Some AAF's from Media Composer Adren 2.1.x, Xpress Pro 5.1.x, and News Cutter Adrenaline & News Cutter XP 6.1.x give parsing errors when importing into Pro Tools 6.4 and higher and not all tracks are imported.
There are several issues that could be causing this. Most cases are resolved in Pro Tools 6.9.1cs3 (Mac OS 10.3.x TDM), 6.9.3cs2 (Mac OS 10.4.x & Win XP TDM), 6.9cs4 (Mac OS 10.3.x & Win XP LE), and 6.9.2cs4 (Mac OS 10.4.x LE). We also recommend that Avid users upgrade to Media Composer Adrenaline 2.1.7, Xpress Pro 5.1.7, and News Cutter Adrenaline & News Cutter XP 6.1.7 and higher.

These issues will be resolved in a future version of Media Station|PT and Avid Studio Bundle.

Avid CPR's are available at http://www.avid.com/onlinesupport/downloadcpr.asp. Scroll down and click on I Accept. For Media Composer Adrenaline, choose Editor_DNA_HD and then MCA_HD 2.1.7. [Page View]

"Spotlight" and "Dashboard" remapping required for some Pro Tools keyboard shortcuts.
Two key commands that Pro Tools uses to initiate recording are assigned to "Spotlight" and "Dashboard," two new features introduced in Mac OS X 10.4 ("Tiger"). In order to use these key commands for Pro Tools, the key commands for "Spotlight" and "Dashboard" must be remapped.

To remap Command+Space:
1) Open System Preferences.
2) Select Spotlight.
3) Turn off the Command+Space mapping by unchecking the checkbox for the Spotlight menu keyboard shortcut, or by clicking in the box and choosing a shortcut or your choice (be sure you do not choose a shortcut that Pro Tools is using).

To remap F12:
1) Open System Preferences.
2) Select Dashboard & Expose.
3) Select F12 from the menu next to the Dashboard item.
4) Choose another F key or select any combination of modifier keys and an F Key.
