| -9073 & -6042 error messages when working in Pro Tools on Windows 98SE and/or ME. |
Below are possible solutions to error messages -9073 & -6042 when working in Pro Tools on Windows 98SE and/or ME.
1. PCI too busy (DAE -6042), -9073 on Win 98 SE Systems with Digi 001 and Pro Tools LE.
The first BIOS release of the Epox 7KXA Mainboard for Athalon with VIA KX133 Chipset was prone to this.
There is a BIOS-Update available on http://www.epox.com/html/english/support/motherboard/bios/694x.htm
This fixed the problems and increased the performance dramatically.
2. DAE error message "-9073 - Disk too slow or too fragmented" on a Digi 001 with Pro Tools LE 5.01 for Windows 98 and a SEAGATE BARRACUDA IDE hard disk.
The hard disk is not set to DMA or U-DMA mode.
Newer IDE drives provide the fast Ultra-DMA-mode capability.
This mode may be jumpered on the hard disk itself or controlled by a configuration utility shipped with the hardware. The standard configuration is (up to now) the U-DMA-33 mode, as the U-DMA capability's also related to the mainboards IDE controller.
Especially Seagate drives need a specific utility to be modified (there aren't any jumpers on the rear of the HD to change the DMA mode).
The utility can be downloaded from Seagates website:
http://www.seagate.com/support/disc/drivers/index.html
Select the ULTRA ATA CONFIGURATION UTILITY to download the program.
Double-click on the file to start it and set the UDMA 66 mode.
This utility can be also used to switch the HD back to the standard mode when it should be used on older CPU's.
Internal comments: Pentium III/600, 256 MB RAM, Matrox G400 DH, Seagate Barracuda 18 MB, Windows 98 SE German
3. Pro Tools LE 5.1 (Win ME) won't start playing back and quits with the error message DAE -9019 (system held up interrupts too long). Sometimes DAE -9073 (disk too slow or too fragmented) is posted.
Beside any hardware related restrictions, it's usually up to Windows how the Volume Cache (Disk Caching) is handled.
On Windows 98/ME, the data will be read from any disk into the RAM, then flushed back to the swap file if the data is too big to be stored into the RAM.
A workaround is:
1) Open the SYSTEM.INI (Windows Root Directory)
2) Scroll to the [VCACHE] entry (usually, no entry below)
3) Enter MAXFILECACHE=2000 as default value
4) Save the file and restart
This prevents the continuos swap of cache data between RAM and HD.
Supplemental comments: CPU PII/400, 256 MB RAM, Windows ME, Digi 001 HD'S: Seagate, IBM, Western Digital

|
| DAE error -9060 - a general list of potential causes on Mac OS and Windows. |
1. Pro Tools does NOT support RAID arrays. This error can occur if drives are connected to a RAID SCSI controller, or if drives have been striped or formatted with a RAID formatting utility such as "Soft Raid".
2. Corrupt audio files can cause -9060 errors. In this scenario, the -9060 error message will come up in exactly the same spot in the session. A simple workaround is to set the track containing the corrupt audio to "inactive".
3. In one case, a bad Volume Bitmap on the audio drive was the cause (Disk Doctor reported "the contents of the bitmap do not agree with the locations of all files in the catalog").
Run a disk utility on the drive to check it. If an error is found, backup your data, initialize the drive, then restore your data.
4. In one case this was resolved by removing a Jaz drive from the SCSI bus.
5. Norton AntiVirus, Norton SystemWorks, and Virex have been reported to cause DAE -9060 errors on OSX. To remove them run the Norton uninstaller or remove the anti-virus files from Library>Startup Items.

|
| when launching Pro Tools, Pro Tools hangs at "Initializing TDM" |
reboot your system and delete the Preferences from the system's preferences folder.
- DigiSetup
- (entire folder) DAE Prefs
- Pro Tools vX.X prefences
This can occur if you relaunch Pro Tools too quickly after shutting down. You should wait until disk activity has stopped (or wait a few seconds) after quitting Pro Tools, before relaunching Pro Tools.
One of the last thing Pro Tools does when quitting, is to SAVE the preferences. If you (re-)launch Pro Tools, one of the first things it will do is READ these preferences. If these two processes occur simultaneously, the system will not allow either process to complete.

|
| DAE error -9128 when trying to use D-Verb plug-in even though my CPU should not be overloaded. Also the CPU meter is up around 90% but I am not using many plug-ins. |
There is currently a problem affecting D-Verb especially when using certain Algorithm settings. Room 2 suffers from this problem, although other algorithms could be affected as well. This problem is more common on Pentium 4 processors.
Workarounds:
1) Use a different Algorithm (e.g. Hall).
2) Insert a plug-in (e.g. POWr Dither) before the D-Verb.

|
| Loud random noise bursts can occur during playback and record in Pro Tools LE 6.0 with Waves 4.0 RTAS Plug-Ins. |
This has been seen with the Waves 4.0 Rvox plug-in, possibly others.
Go to www.waves.com and hit "Downloads". Under the "Quick links" section hit "Updates" and download "Wave-Shell DAE 4.0.1 x".
2. Go to: HD>Library>Application support>Digidesign>Plug-ins – trash the current Wave-Shell 4.0_x and replace it with the new one (Wave-Shell DAE 4.0.1 x).
WaveShell-DAE 4.0.1_X fixes problems, such as loud noise bursts, occurring when issuing Play/Stop commands. If you are using Pro-Tools TDM/LE 6.0 or higher, it is highly recommended to use this WaveShell.
Installation: Go to Digidedign’s Plug-Ins folder (Your Hard Disk / Library/ Application Support/Digidesign/Plug-Ins), trash WaveShell DAE 4.0_X and replace it with WaveShell-DAE 4.0.1_X.

|
| DAE error -6031 can occur when using RTAS Plug-Ins with SYNC I/O as clock master. |
This is a known issue in Pro Tools 6.1, and is fixed in 6.4.
As a workaround a new DAE was developed to overcome this problem. Install DAE v.6.1cs1 (available on the 6.1 CD in the Additional Files/Beta Software folder, or as a download from http://www.digidesign.com/download/daedsi/).

|
| I get an error "No peripheral found for the deck." when launching Pro Tools |
This error can be caused when installing over a previously installed version of Pro Tools that used different Digidesign hardware (e.g. installing Pro Tools LE for Mbox over a previously installed version of Pro Tools for 001).
If you have both installation CD's for each type of hardware, run the uninstaller from those CD's, then restart your computer and do a reinstall of the proper version.
To uninstall from the CD, put the CD in your drive and double-click on the 'Install Pro Tools (LE)' icon from the CD.
Continue thru the license agreement and, when you get to the page that says 'Custom Install', click on 'Custom Install' and, from the drop down menu, select 'Uninstall', then click on the 'Uninstall' button in the lower right.
If you do not have both installation CD's, you can run the uninstaller from the CD you DO have, but you will also need to remove some components by hand, either by logging in as Root or by booting into OS9 (if your computer is capable of this) and removing the following:
>System>Library>CFMSupport - remove DAE, Digidesign DSP Manager, DigiDirectIO, DigiHardwareSetup, DigiHwGUI, DigiStreamManager and DigiSystemInterface
Then trash the DAE Prefs folder, Digisetup, and Pro Tools LE preferences in >Users>Current User>Library>Preferences
You should then be able to reinstall the proper version for your hardware.

In many cases this is narrowed down to bad hardware. Suspect the HD Process or HD Core card. Also check the flex cable.
