What Is An iLok & Why Would I Need One?

Digidesign has transitioned all of our plug-in software copy protection from floppy drive based key disks to copy protection authorizations that reside on the iLok technology provide by PACE. The following is some information about iLok technology.

The iLok USB Hardware Key (pictured here) is a device that holds authorization keys and connects via the USB port to your computer.

The iLok USB Hardware Key enables you to carry all of your authorizations with you wherever you go using a single key:
  • It's Portable: iLok enables you to easily move authorizations from one computer to another. Use your software at home, at the office, at a studio, or at a friend's house. iLok makes it portable.
  • It's Safe: Authorizations are stored in the secure iLok USB Hardware Key — not on the computer or hard drive. iLok is immune to problems caused by machine upgrades, disk maintenance, hardware failures, and software updates.
  • It's Convenient: Store all of your iLok-enabled software authorizations on a single iLok USB Hardware Key, regardless of developer

Using iLok.com & Electronic iLok License Transfers

Many products that are sold online can be purchased as web-only electronic licenses to activate optional plug-ins and software installed from web downloads or your Pro Tools CD. These include many plug-ins and optional software products sold as "Full License" or time-limited "Rental" licenses available on the DigiStore. For these electronic licenses, no iLok License Card is included or required. Licenses are purchased online, deposited to your iLok.com account, and then transferred to your iLok. This is a quick and easy process that allows you to purchase products online and use them immediately.

Many new boxed versions of iLok-enabled software products from Digidesign include an activation card with instructions on how to authorize your iLok using the Digidesign website. With these products, an Activation Code is used to deposit the licenses to your account on iLok.com.

What is my iLok User ID?
If you have not already done so, you would create a free iLok.com account yourself at iLok.com. Once you create an account there, your iLok User ID is what you use to login to your account on iLok.com (not your login password, which you also choose). Your iLok.com User ID is sometimes referred to as your "iLok ID", "iLok User ID", or "iLok Account". All of these are the same thing, your login name [More]

Windows Vista SP2 — Not Tested — No Known Issues

Windows Vista SP2 — Not Tested — No Known Issues

Service Pack 2 for Windows (released May 26, 2009) has not been tested with Pro Tools systems. There are currently no known issues with Vista SP2 compared to Vista SP1 with Pro Tools for Vista. However, users should be aware of the following:
  • Although there are currently no known issues, Windows Vista SP2 is not yet officially qualified for use with Pro Tools systems. Should you choose to update to Vista SP2, be advised that is an unsupported configuration at this time.
  • If you choose to update to Windows Vista SP2, it is strongly recommended that you backup your system and create a restore point before updating to SP2, should you encounter any problems after installing the update.

Compatibility Alert — Internet Explorer 8
Note: This is a separate issue that is unrelated to Vista SP2, and users on Vista SP2 do not have to install IE8.

Digidesign is currently investigating reports of Pro Tools not launching for some users after installation of Internet Explorer 8 on either Windows XP or Windows Vista. At this time it is recommended that customers avoid installing IE8 until we complete our investigation. For more information, including how to uninstall Internet Explorer 8 and revert to IE7, see the following page:

Setting up a Yamaha Motif for use with Pro Tools 7.x using MTC and MIDI ...

Setting up a Yamaha Motif for use with Pro Tools 7.x using MTC and MIDI Beat Clock.
There are multiple ways you can configure your Motif for use with Pro Tools. Listed below are the various ways you can accomplish this with various models of the Motif. To use this page most efficiently, scroll down until you find the instructions for the model that you own.

NOTES:

1) Yamaha USB drivers are incompatible with Digidesign hardware and Pro Tools software. If you have the drivers already installed, you must uninstall them in order for this guide to work. All configurations below require a MIDI cable to be connect from the MIDI output of your Digidesign interface to the MIDI input of the Motif.

2) If using an Mbox or Mbox 2 Mini, a Digidesign MIDI I/O or third-party USB-MIDI interface must be installed on the computer for all of the listed configurations.

3) All of the configurations below require you to properly set the tempo in Pro Tools and in the Motif. For instructions on how to do this, see the instructions at the bottom of this page.

4) Since Pro Tools can not be synced to MIDI Beat Clock and the Motif can not send out MTC, all configurations below have the Motif being slaved to Pro Tools.

To set up Pro Tools to sync via MIDI Beat Clock:

1) Set your tempo in Pro Tools. (See instructions at the bottom of this page.)

2) Go to the Setup menu and choose MIDI Beat Clock. Check the boxes for "Enable MIDI Beat Clock" and the corresponding MIDI output port.

To set up Pro Tools to sync via MTC (MIDI Time Code):

1) Go to the Setup menu and choose “Peripherals…”. Click on the Synchronization tab and set “MTC Generator Port" to the corresponding MIDI output port.

2) Go to the Setup menu and choose “Session". Set "Time Code Rate" to 30 and check the box for "using MTC".

NOTE: (When using MTC, it is recommended to add 1 or 2 bars of pre-roll.)

"ProToolsLE.exe" or "ProTools M-Powered.exe" is stuck in the Task Manager ...

"ProToolsLE.exe" or "ProTools M-Powered.exe" is stuck in the Task Manager and End Process doesn't end the Pro Tools process.
If you find yourself in a situation where you can't launch Pro Tools because you can't end the process, ProToolsLE.exe (or ProTools M-Powered.exe if you're running Pro Tools M-Powered), from the Windows Task Manager, do the following:

1) Disconnect or turn off any USB device that is currently working as a MIDI interface and is not your Pro Tools audio interface. (See notes at the bottom of this page.)

2) Wait until you get a notification that says that the device could not be disconnected because it's already in use.

3) After a few seconds of getting that message, the MIDI interface should actually be disconnected and the Pro Tools process in the Task Manager should disappear.

4) You should now be able to relaunch Pro Tools again just fine.

This typically happens when a MIDI interface (of any kind) is connected to the computer and could be caused by a number of things. Common reasons for this to happen are if Pro Tools freezes or comes up with a (Not Responding...) notification or your computer starts to not behave correctly (for one reason or another) or if the MIDI interface itself has a hiccup of some kind.

NOTE:
Nowadays, MIDI interfaces are found on a number of devices ranging from actual MIDI interfaces, MIDI controllers, and even some hardware synthesizers that have a USB connection.

Uninstall QuickTime from Add or Remove Programs (or from Programs and Features on Vista) in the Control Panel. If you can't find QuickTime in this list, delete the QuickTime folder from: (C:) > Program Files

If you would like to have QuickTime on your system, it is a free program and can be downloaded at any time from Apple. If these steps fixed your problem, try installing a different version of QuickTime.

When attempting to process an AudioSuite plug-in, the operation seems to complete but nothing happens in the edit window. No processed file is written to the track.
This is likely because "Use In Playlist" is not selected in the audiosuite plug-in window.

This issue can happen in Pro Tools HD, LE & M-Powered on Windows and Mac.

Simply clicking the "Use In Playlist" button so that it becomes highlighted in the top-right corner of any AudioSuite plug-in window will usually resolve this.

If this button is already highlighted, trashing the Pro Tools preferences may help. [Page View]
