Mbox 2 Beta Firmware & Driver Update Kit v1.38

For Select PowerBook G4s Only

For more information on this issue, please see Mbox 2 Compatibility Information with PowerBook G4
http://www.digidesign.com/compato/osx/mbox2/pb.cfm

From the Mbox 2 Firmware v1.38.pdf Read Me document, included with both downloads:

We have identified a potential problem with some aluminum Apple PowerBook G4 models. These laptops may not provide sufficient power from one or both of their built-in USB ports.

Digidesign is providing a beta firmware and driver update to help counteract these issues. Only users experiencing a lack or loss of communication with Mbox 2 and a PowerBook G4 should use this update. If you do not have a PowerBook G4, there is no need to update your Mbox 2 firmware with this version.

Macintosh users that update to this firmware will not have their Mbox 2 recognized on a Windows-based PC unless they also update the Mbox 2 drivers on that Windows machine. Note that you only need to do the following if you have updated your Mbox 2 firmware as above, and want to use your Mbox 2 on both a Macintosh and a Windows computer. [Page View]

DAE Error 6101 occurs immediately upon playback in a 48KHz 24 bit session when the H/W Buffer is set to 64 samples
This is a known issue in Pro Tools LE 8 (Mac OS X with PPC).

There is no workaround.

This does not occur on Intel-basedMacs. [Page View]

How to Get Apple Mac OS X 10.4 Upgrades & Updates

Compatibility Alert — Mac OS X 10.4.9

June 8, 2007 — Mac OS X 10.4.9 now qualified with Pro Tools 7.3.x
(Note: Pro Tools 7.4 is also qualified with Mac OS X 10.4.9)
If you choose to update to Mac OS X 10.4.9, or your Mac came with Mac OS X 10.4.9 preinstalled, please follow these instructions:
  • Do not use Apple's automatic Software Update or the Mac OS X 10.4.9 Delta Update. Instead, install the Mac OS X 10.4.9 Combo Update for Intel-based or PowerPC-based Macs:
  • If you have already updated using Software Update, you should download and install the Mac OS X 10.4.9 Combo Update.
  • If your Mac came with Mac OS X 10.4.9 preinstalled, you should still download and install the Mac OS X 10.4.9 Combo Update if you are experiencing issues such as Pro Tools not opening.
    • In some late 2007 Macs, such as iMac, MacBook, and MacBook Pro with the new Intel "Santa Rosa" chipset, you may not be able to apply the 10.4.9 Combo update to the existing 10.4.9 preinstallation.
    • If you are not able to run the Combo Update, please try the Mac OS X Prebinding Script below.
      -or-
    • Download and install the Mac OS X 10.4.11 Combo Update (Intel)
    • Preliminary reports suggest that Mac OS X 10.4.11 may contain fixes for some of the Mbox 2 USB interface problems such as kernel panics on newer Intel-based Macs.
Please Note: As detailed below, Software Update should not be used to update your Mac OS, always use the Combo Update.

With Pro Tools and many other software applications, issues with a program not opening or crashing may have to do with prebinding that is not properly handled by using the automatic software update program, particularly programs such as Pro Tools that use PACE-protected software. Both PACE and Apple are aware of this issue and are working to provide updates to remedy the issue.

The following download from the PACE website may help without having to download the Mac OS X 10.4.9 Combo Update, or in addition to the Combo Update. The included script resets the prebinding on your Mac OS X system:
For additional troubleshooting, you may need to delete corrupted Pro Tools preferences and database files. The Digidesign Tech Support Utility provides an easy to use program for this. This utility is included in the Tech Support Folder download available from the following page:
Mac OS X 10.4.10 (and Other Apple Software Updates) & Pro Tools Launch Failure/Bouncing Icon in Dock
Mac OS X 10.4.10 has not been tested or qualified by Digidesign, but the same launch failure issues can occur if you have updated to Mac OS X 10.4.10. Apple has posted the following information that updating to QuickTime 7.2 can also cause the pre-binding issue:

Mbox 2 Firmware Update 1.38

Mbox 2 Firmware Update 1.38
  • For use with Pro Tools LE 6.8.1 or 7.x
  • Windows version also available for users that need to use the Mbox 2 with Firmware 1.38 on both Mac and Windows.

We have identified a problem with some aluminum Apple PowerBook G4 models. These laptops may not provide sufficient power from one or both of their built-in USB ports.

Please follow the Firmware Updater instructions closely to avoid damage to your Mbox 2.

To update your Mbox 2 firmware and driver from a Macintosh

  • Quit all applications and connect your Mbox 2 to your computer.
  • Download the file below named Mbox 2 Firmware Updater 1.38 for Mac OS X.
  • Run the installer. This will install the updated drivers onto your computer, as well as place the Firmware Updater applica-tion on your desktop.
  • Restart your computer. Note that the Mbox 2 LEDs will not light up. This is normal and expected.
  • Go to Applications/System Preferences and launch the Mbox 2 Control Panel to verify that your Mbox 2 is connected. This may take up to 30 seconds.
  • Launch the Firmware Updater that was placed on your desktop to update the Mbox 2 firmware.
  • If you have multiple Mac intosh machines, you will need to update the drivers on all your Macintosh machines: Repeat steps 1–5 for each additional Macintosh. You can skip step 6 because you only need to update the firmware once.
Macintosh users that update to this firmware will not have their Mbox 2 recognized on a Windows-based PC unless they also update the Mbox 2 drivers on that Windows machine.
To do this, proceed to the following steps. Note that you only need to do the following if you have updated your Mbox 2 firmware as above, and want to use your Mbox 2 on both a Macintosh and a Windows computer.

To update your Mbox 2 drivers on a Windows PC:

  • Download the file below named Mbox 2 Firmware Updater 1.38 for Windows XP.
  • Run the installer (Mbox 2 Firmware Updater Setup.exe). This will install the updated drivers onto your computer, as well as place the Firmware Updater application on your desktop. Note you will not need the Mbox 2 Firmware updater if you have updated your Mbox 2 firmware previously on your Macintosh (using the steps above).
  • During installation, Windows will warn you of "unsigned device drivers". Please click-through these warnings to assure that the firmware update can complete uninterrupted.
  • Restart your computer.

Please Note: This Mbox 2 Firmware Update v1.38 may not solve this issue with all PowerBook models. If you have one of the supported PowerBook G4 models listed in the Compatibility Documents, and you are still not able to use the Mbox 2 on either USB port, please Contact Digidesign Technical Support for further troubleshooting.

This same version of the Mbox 2 Firmware Update 1.38 is included on the Pro Tools LE 7.0 CD in the Additional Files\Unsupported Software folder.

Mbox 2 devices that have been updated with newer firmware to counteract an Apple PowerBook G4 compatibility issue may not be recognized by Pro tools 7.0 software.
In this rare case please install a newer "beta" Mbox 2 driver that can be found in the "Unsupported Software" folder on your Pro Tools 7.0 installer CD.

Fader movement gets choppy and hesitant intermittently while playing back volume and pan automation.
• Running on a PowerBook G4/400
• Hardware Buffer = 512, CPU% = 85, DAE Playback Buffer = 4
• Recording to 2 tracks while playing 6 on a single Digidrive FireWire 80.
• While recording the fader movement of the playback tracks briefly halts periodically. Seems to be when the deck is having "trouble", shortly before a -9128, -6086, or -6093 error is thrown.

This was reported with Pro Tools 6.0.2 with some of the slower Powerbook computers and is a design/performance limitation.

I'm getting dropped frames in my video playback or interruptions in my audio playback when using a Powerbook G4 (12-inch 1.5GHz), PowerBook G4 (15-inch 1.67/1.5GHz), or PowerBook G4 (17-inch 1.67GHz),
In some environments, such as live concert halls, recording studios, or dance clubs, external vibrations may be major enough to cause the computer's Sudden Motion Sensor to unexpectedly park the hard drive heads, resulting in interrupted sound or video playback. In these situations, you may find that you want to disable the feature temporarily.

To disable the Sudden Motion Sensor:

1) From the Finder's Go menu, choose Utilities.
2) In the Utilities folder, open Terminal.
3) When the command line appears, type pmset -g # and press Return. This command queries the computer for the current setting of the Sudden Motion Sensor. The default setting is "1" (turned on).
If the above command returns "1," you can disable the Sudden Motion Sensor by typing sudo pmset -a ams 0 and pressing Return (changing the setting to a zero disables the module).
4) Type your administrator password when you are prompted and press Return.
5) Type the pmset -g # command again to be sure that the setting has been applied.

Any changes that you make to the Sudden Motion Sensor setting remains in effect even after you restart the computer. If you choose to disable the Sudden Motion Sensor, Apple recommends that you re-enable it as soon as possible in order to take full advantage of the feature.

To re-enable the Sudden Motion Sensor:

1) From the Finder's Go menu, choose Utilities.
2) In the Utilities folder, open Terminal.
3) When the command line appears, type pmset -g # and press Return. If you have the Sudden Motion Sensor turned off, the command will return a zero (0).
If the above command returns a zero, you can re-enable the Sudden Motion Sensor by typing sudo pmset -a ams 1 and pressing Return.
4) Type your administrator password when you are prompted and press Return.
5) Type the pmset -g # command again to be sure that the setting has been applied.
