When Launching Pro Tools 7.3 this error was seen, Digidesign hardware is in use by another application. (-1133).
In one case Pro Tools M-Powered 7.1 was co-installed with Pro Tools LE 7.3. Performing a clean uninstall of Pro Tools M-Powered 7.1 and Pro Tools LE 7.3 and then installing Pro Tools LE 7.3 by itself resolved the error.

To Uninstall Pro Tools LE or M-powered LE 7.1:
1) Insert the Pro Tools disc and run the Pro Tools installer
2) Proceed through installation until you see "Custom Install"
3) Click on Custom Install and choose Uninstall
4) Hit the Uninstall button and choose Clean Uninstall to complete the procedure.

To Uninstall Pro Tools LE or Mpowered 7.3:

1) Open the application folder > Digidesign > Pro Tools > Utilities
2) Click on the uninstaller icon.
3) Select uninstall and then select the type: clean uninstall

It is not supported to run different versions of Pro Tools LE and Pro Tools M-powered on the same system. The version numbers have to match exactly.

What does the "Plug-In Streaming Buffer" setting in the Playback Engine ...

What does the "Plug-In Streaming Buffer" setting in the Playback Engine dialog do? It's new in 7.3, and isn't documented.
This is a new pref and is related to plug-ins that stream data (like Structure).

Info from the Structure Public Beta Read Me:

Size
Adjusts the general size of the pre-load buffer, the higher this setting, the more sample content is pre-loaded to RAM. Reduce this setting on computers with small RAM.

Optimize For Streaming Content on Audio Drives (Requires More System Memory)
Activate this setting, if samples are on the same disk as the audio files played back on Pro Tools audio tracks to improve disk prioritization. Deactivate this setting when samples are on a different disk than audio files played back on Pro Tools audio tracks to improve the maximum voice count. [Page View]

Under certain circumstances, creating new Memory Locations could cause an Unexpectedly Quit [OS X] or Access Violation Error [XP].
This is a known issue in Pro Tools LE, M-Powered, and Pro Tools Academic v7.3 (Windows XP and Mac OS X) and would occur if the preference "Default Region Color Coding" was set to "Marker locations." Note: This problem does not occur in Pro Tools HD.

This has been fixed in version 7.3.1cs2:
Pro Tools LE 7.3.1cs2 Windows
Pro Tools LE 7.3.1cs2 Mac
Pro Tools M-Powered 7.3.1cs2 (Hardware Authorized) Windows

Pro Tools 7.3 Web and DVD installers fail to install properly and asks ...

Pro Tools 7.3 Web and DVD installers fail to install properly and asks the user to reinstall.
One of two things may occur:
    1) At the end of the installation you will see an error message "There were errors installing the software please try installing again."

    2) If the installation completes and you attempt to launch after reboot you will see the following errors:

“An item in the Startup Items folder (“/Library/StartupItems/DigidesignLoader”) does not have the proper security settings.”

      “/System/Library/Extensions/DigiDal.kext was installed improperly”

      “/System/Library/Extensions/DigiIO.kext was installed improperly”
Workaround: Install Pro Tools without selecting MIDI IO, and then to run the individual MIDI IO package from within the Pro Tools installer. To do this, control-click on the Pro Tools installer and choose "Show Package Contents." Open the "Packages" folder and run the MIDI I/O installer.

We have also seen the problem solved by doing the following:
    1) Install PT component by component
    2) Run the latest OS X update.

"error.unable.to.co.install.m.later.le" or "error.unable.to.co.install.le.later.m" ...

"error.unable.to.co.install.m.later.le" or "error.unable.to.co.install.le.later.m" alert when trying to install Pro Tools LE or M-Powered 7.3 on a system that already has 7.3.1 of the other installed.
Installers are typically written to prevent replacing newer components with older ones. If you need LE and M-Powered 7.3.1 installed on the same system, you should run the 7.3 installers for both, then run the 7.3.1 updaters for both.

For example:
    1) Run the Pro Tools LE 7.3 installer
    2) Run the Pro Tools M-Powered 7.3 installer
    3) Run the Pro Tools LE 7.3.1 updater
    4) Run the Pro Tools M-Powered 7.3.1 updater

Intego VirusBarrier reports OSX.Rooter.BlackCat.A virus in DigiShoeTool (installed by Pro Tools 7.x Mac).
This is actually a false positive. The Pro Tools 7.3.1 installer and components have been checked and were given a clean bill of health. [Page View]

Can different versions of Pro Tools be installed on the same computer?

Can different versions of Pro Tools be installed on the same computer?

Q. Can I install both Pro Tools LE and Pro Tools M-Powered on the same computer?
A. Beginning with Pro Tools 7.1, both Pro Tools LE and Pro Tools M-Powered can be installed on the same Mac OS X or Windows XP startup system, as long as they are both the exact same version number, such as:
  • Pro Tools LE 7.1 and Pro Tools M-Powered 7.1 for PowerPC-based Mac OS X or Windows XP
  • Pro Tools LE 7.1.1 and Pro Tools M-Powered 7.1.1 for Intel-based Mac OS X
  • Pro Tools LE 7.3 and Pro Tools M-Powered 7.3 for Mac OS X or Windows XP
  • Pro Tools LE 7.3.1 and Pro Tools M-Powered 7.3.1 for Mac OS X or Windows XP (note: for this combination, you should install LE 7.3 then MP 7.3, then run the 7.3.1 updaters for LE and MP - you will not be able to install 7.3 of one if 7.3.1 of the other is already installed)
  • Pro Tools LE 7.4 and Pro Tools M-Powered 7.4 for Mac OS X, Windows XP, or Windows Vista
You can install either Pro Tools LE or M-Powered first, then install the other, as long as they are both the same version number.

If you do not own the same version number of both LE and M-Powered, you will need to install each on separate drives or separate partitions with Pro Tools LE and Pro Tools M-Powered installed on separate startup systems.

Q. What about Pro Tools LE and Pro Tools HD? Can they both be installed on the same computer?
A. Digidesign only supports co-installation of Pro Tools LE and Pro Tools HD software when they are installed on separate drives or separate partions with HD and LE installed on separate startup systems.

As a possible workaround (unsupported due to limited testing) for Pro Tools 7.x:

1. Install either Pro Tools HD 7.3 or Pro Tools LE 7.3
2. Run the update from to Pro Tools HD 7.3.1 or LE 7.3.1 (available from Featured Downloads in the Support section of the website)
3. Move the Pro Tools HD or LE application from the Pro Tools folder to your desktop.
4. Install the second application (Pro Tools HD 7.3 or LE 7.3)
5. Update the second Pro Tools HD or LE 7.3 application to version 7.3.1
6. Place the previously moved Pro Tools HD or LE (v7.3.1) application from your desktop to your Pro Tools folder.

Both Pro Tools HD (v7.3.1) and Pro Tools LE (v7.3.1) should then both be in your Pro Tools folder, and share the same Pro Tools system files.

Please Note: In order to install Pro Tools HD software, your HD Core card must be installed.

Opening Sessions on Pro Tools HD or Pro Tools LE
To force a session to open in the desired version of Pro Tools, instead of double clicking on the session icon, do one of the following:
  • Drag the session file to either the Pro Tools HD or Pro Tools LE icon in your Pro Tools folder (or an alias of the icon, such as an alias on the desktop or the Mac OS X dock).
  • Launch Pro Tools HD or Pro Tools LE, then open or create a session from Pro Tools' File menu.

When bouncing to QuickTime movie, if the bounce duration exceeds the length of the video clip the resulting movie will contain audio/video that is out of sync.
This is a known issue in Pro Tools 7.3. If the bounce duration exceeded the length of the video clip, the resulting movie would be stretched to fit the selection, resulting in a time-stretched picture.

This is fixed in version 7.3.1 which can be found in the Downloads section for the specific type and platform of Pro Tools software on the Support & Downloads page. [Page View]

With Pro Tools M-Powered 7.x, mute automation and volume automation are not read properly after 6 minutes in the session.
Mute automation will not be played back if the automation point begins after 6 minutes in the timeline. Volume automation will play back the amplitude changes; however, the fader on the track will not move. Pan automation seems to be unaffected. A workaround for this problem is to mute the region of audio instead of automating a mute.

This problem has NOT been observed in Pro Tools M-Powered version 7.3. [Page View]
