How do "virtual nodes" work and what are they?
Virtual nodes is a capability of OMS to update it's published list of synthesizers to applications that use OMS dynamically, responding to the instantiation or de-instantiation of software synths and IAC buses as they may occur in real-time. What this means is that if you instantiate a software synth that uses virtual nodes, OMS sees it and automatically creates a listing for it in the application that can address it. Subsequent instantiations yield further listings, and so on.

So far the only real-world call for virtual nodes is within Virus TDM, a software synthesizer that uses Digidesign Mix card DSP chips for its RAM rather than other software synthesizers which use regular computer RAM. If you insert Virus on a Pro Tools track, it immediately becomes available as an output device on any Midi track within Pro Tools. The use of virtual nodes allows one to differentiate between separate instantiations of the same synth (i.e. Virus 1a, 1b and so on) and instantiations of different synths (i.e. Virus 1, 2, 3 and so on). As soon as the synth is removed and thus deactivated, it is also removed as an available output device within OMS and is no longer published to Pro Tools.

Are OMS and FreeMidi compatible?

Are OMS and FreeMidi compatible?
Yes they are. In order for OMS to detect most MOTU midi interfaces, FreeMidi must be installed after OMS, and FreeMidi setup run first before running OMS Setup. FreeMidi needs to be told to use OMS when available.

QickTime Movie playback in Pro Tools drifts behind the audio. Even though you can drop the cursor anywhere in the session and the movie will start in sync. QuickTime.
Setting Movie Playback Priority to Normal when using a capture card resolves this. In one case a Miro DC-30+ was being used, with the Movie Priority set to medium, changing it to Normal, as stated in the manual, fixed the problem.

After switching out of Multiple User Mode (DAE -5000 resulted), I can't preview audio in any other application.
A copy of Digi Setup file is created in all user folders. Trashing all Multiple User presets and folders resolves the issue

Menu names get shortened, File becomes F..., Edit becomes E..., etc.
The Font Manager in OS 8.6 can corrupt the FOND resource in an app, leading to this problem, as well as the inability to move fonts, etc.

An updated Font Manager (which includes the Font First Aid utility) is available via Apple:

"You can't save the expanded file with the same name as this running application. Please try again. Result Code: 8" error during hard disk authorization maintenance.
This can happen if you have performed a complete backup (mirror image) of the system drive and leave the backup disk mounted on the Desktop when attempting to reauthorize the software.

The DeAuthorizer from the diskettes seems to get confused when it finds duplicate files. One on the newly installed Mac OS and a copy of the same system software, plug-ins and applications on the backup medium which mounted on restart.

Workaround: Unmount the drive (or disk) from your system which contains the backup of your system.

What is the maximum cable length for USB devices?

What is the maximum cable length for USB devices?
-In practice, the USB specification limits the length of a cable between full speed devices to 5 meters (a little under 16 feet 5 inches). For a low speed device the limit is 3 meters (9 feet 10 inches).

-With the maximum of 5 hubs connected with 5m cables and a 5m cable going to your full speed device, this will give you 30m of cable (see section 7.1.19 for details). With a low speed device, you will be able to get a range up to 27m, depending on how long the device's cable is. With a straightforward cable route, you will probably be able to reach out 25m or so from the PC.

QuickTime Movies created in Pro Tools by performing a "Bounce to Movie..." do not playback on PCs.
The workaround is to open the newly-created movie in a program such as Adobe Premiere and do a "Save As..." to re-bounce the movie.
