How to Get Apple Mac OS X 10.4 Upgrades & Updates

Compatibility Alert — Mac OS X 10.4.9

June 8, 2007 — Mac OS X 10.4.9 now qualified with Pro Tools 7.3.x
(Note: Pro Tools 7.4 is also qualified with Mac OS X 10.4.9)
If you choose to update to Mac OS X 10.4.9, or your Mac came with Mac OS X 10.4.9 preinstalled, please follow these instructions:
  • Do not use Apple's automatic Software Update or the Mac OS X 10.4.9 Delta Update. Instead, install the Mac OS X 10.4.9 Combo Update for Intel-based or PowerPC-based Macs:
  • If you have already updated using Software Update, you should download and install the Mac OS X 10.4.9 Combo Update.
  • If your Mac came with Mac OS X 10.4.9 preinstalled, you should still download and install the Mac OS X 10.4.9 Combo Update if you are experiencing issues such as Pro Tools not opening.
    • In some late 2007 Macs, such as iMac, MacBook, and MacBook Pro with the new Intel "Santa Rosa" chipset, you may not be able to apply the 10.4.9 Combo update to the existing 10.4.9 preinstallation.
    • If you are not able to run the Combo Update, please try the Mac OS X Prebinding Script below.
      -or-
    • Download and install the Mac OS X 10.4.11 Combo Update (Intel)
    • Preliminary reports suggest that Mac OS X 10.4.11 may contain fixes for some of the Mbox 2 USB interface problems such as kernel panics on newer Intel-based Macs.
Please Note: As detailed below, Software Update should not be used to update your Mac OS, always use the Combo Update.

With Pro Tools and many other software applications, issues with a program not opening or crashing may have to do with prebinding that is not properly handled by using the automatic software update program, particularly programs such as Pro Tools that use PACE-protected software. Both PACE and Apple are aware of this issue and are working to provide updates to remedy the issue.

The following download from the PACE website may help without having to download the Mac OS X 10.4.9 Combo Update, or in addition to the Combo Update. The included script resets the prebinding on your Mac OS X system:
For additional troubleshooting, you may need to delete corrupted Pro Tools preferences and database files. The Digidesign Tech Support Utility provides an easy to use program for this. This utility is included in the Tech Support Folder download available from the following page:
Mac OS X 10.4.10 (and Other Apple Software Updates) & Pro Tools Launch Failure/Bouncing Icon in Dock
Mac OS X 10.4.10 has not been tested or qualified by Digidesign, but the same launch failure issues can occur if you have updated to Mac OS X 10.4.10. Apple has posted the following information that updating to QuickTime 7.2 can also cause the pre-binding issue:

What is FileVault?

What is FileVault?
Note: Having FileVault enabled will cause errors installing, launching, and running Pro Tools.

To disable FileVault go to:
Apple Menu > System Preferences > Security and click the "Turn Off FileVault"

Description:

Mac OS X includes FileVault, which allows you to encrypt the information in your home folder. FileVault creates a separate volume for your home folder and encrypts the contents of it. The the data in your home folder is encoded and your information is secure if your computer is lost or stolen. FileVault uses the latest government-approved encryption standard, the Advanced Encryption Standard with 128-bit keys (AES-128).

When you turn on FileVault, you must also set up a master password for the computer that you or an administrator can use if you forget your regular login password.

WARNING: If you turn on FileVault and then forget both your login password and your master password, you will not be able to log in to your account and your data will be lost forever.

If the information on your computer is of a sensitive nature, you should consider using FileVault. For example, if you carry all your company's financial data on your PowerBook, losing your PowerBook could allow someone else access to sensitive data that might hurt your business. If you are logged out of your account when your PowerBook is lost, and FileVault is turned on, your information is safe.

Since your home folder is encrypted, some tasks that normally access your home folder may be prevented, for example: backup utilities may see your home folder as one folder that's always changing, and this could slow down your backup. Also, if you're not logged into your computer, other users will not have access to shared folders in your home folder.

Is there a limit to how much RAM (memory) a Pro Tools system can utilize?
Applications on Windows XP can address no more than 2 GB of RAM by design. Applications on OS X can access roughly 3 GB of RAM. All applications, including Pro Tools, are subject to the standard rules outlined above.

Plug-ins and their data are loaded into the Pro Tools application address space. [Page View]

Logical End of File Reached -39.

Logical End of File Reached -39.
This may occur in sessions created without Mac/PC compatibility engaged that have been copied from a Mac OS X machine to a drive formatted FAT 32 (MS-DOS) and then back to the Macintosh hard drive.

Copying a session that does not have Mac/PC compatibility enabled onto a non-Macintosh formatted hard drive drive strips the resource fork from the session file. The file will be missing vital data that can only be recovered by going back to the original session file before it was copied to the drive.

Sessions that have been corrupted in this way are not recoverable, however, AIFF and WAV audio files may still be intact and contain time stamp data which may aid in reconstructing the session.

more information may be found here: http://www.macdisk.com/macforken.php3

In one case where the session was recoverable, but the files could not be imported (because the resource forks had been stripped), the customer was able to rewrite the header information using soundhack.
